A phalaenopsis orchid DNA database has been developed to protect the breeders’ plant rights, according to Taiwan Seed Improvement and Propagation Station under the ROC Council of Agriculture June 28.

“Phalaenopsis orchids are one of Taiwan’s four flagship agricultural export products, generating US$114 million in 2012. Nearly 100 new varieties are cultivated annually in Taiwan,” said Chang Hui-ju, a TSIPS researcher.

“The database enables breeders to see if their species has already been cultivated and assists them in gaining knowledge on similar orchids,” Chang said.

When examining seedlings, buyers find it almost impossible to differentiate the species solely from the leaves, the database helps eliminate any possible cases of confusion with export orders.

According to Chang, the database includes such information as phalaenopsis orchid classification, accreditation standards and particular genes for each variety.

“Only TSIPS can use the database at present as it contains sensitive business information,” she said. “But we are planning to let the public have limited access in future.” (KML-JSM)
